BE HERE. BE KNOWN. When you’re in Crawfordsville, you’re known.
Located in West Central Indiana along Sugar Creek, the City of Crawfordsville is a community that’s home to nearly 17,000 people. Rooted in deep history and built on innovation, the foundation to the city’s culture is its inviting hospitality.
Strategically positioned between Indianapolis and Chicago, Crawfordsville is your home base to any kind of entertainment, sporting event, or arts and cultural venue a person could want while still providing that small-town feel.
The city was founded in 1823 and incorporated in 1834 and named after William H. Crawford, Secretary of the Treasury under Presidents Madison and Monroe. Our extensive history of innovation began in the 19th century and still continues today. We are home to Wabash College and minutes from Purdue University and serve a population of over 2.1 million within 50 minutes of the city.
Crawfordsville is home to many famous authors including General Lew Wallace who wrote “Ben Hur: A Tale of the Christ”, and Maurine Dallas Watkins who wrote the stage play “Chicago”. Besides its reputation for creative arts, Crawfordsville is also known as the “Cradle of Basketball”. As one of only a dozen communities in Indiana where the Hoosier game of basketball started, it proudly boasts two firsts: it was the first site where the peach basket was replaced by two metal hoops made by a local blacksmith, and in 1894 was the first community to host an official game of basketball with paying fans.
